CAN YOU TAKE A HOLIDAY ON THE IRD?

Despite the recession, 210,000 people went abroad for a holiday in September (an all-time record high). Whether you went too or are planning to follow suit soon, you may be happy to learn that some if not all of  your holiday spending can be  offset against tax. Here are some simple rules to make the IRD chip in on your next break... (read more)

TAX NEWS
GIFT FEST ON THE WAY!

The best news this year so far on the tax front, Gift Duty is to be abolished as from 1 October 2011. Fantastic - abolishing taxes should be the first duty of any government!

It's bad news for lawyers though...

CLIENT PROFILE
Dan Sankey started his nurseries over 20 years ago. Situated on Farndon Road, Greenleaf Nurseries are a heaven of fruit and ornamental trees. Their strength? The complete range of trees and shrubs, with many rare species (22 types of oaks alone!) and a lot of natives, including the 3m+ grade. Add to that a wealth of knowledge which is willingly shared and you will - just like we did, leave with more than what you came for.
Dan's advice to new business owners? 'Don't rush it, he says. Acquire experience and build up your knowledge with a successful business before starting your own.'
A good accountant and advisor also comes in handy: 'Nick was very good in helping setting up and customising our accounting software, says Dan, then providing support until we were comfortable using it.'
What's a trap that every business owner should be wary of? 'You've got to be prepared for changes in the market, answers Dan. Nick is always very proactive with marketing ideas and solutions,' he adds.
Greenleaf Nurseries can be contacted by phone on 06-870 0563 or by email sales@greenleafnurseries.co.nz

WORLD-CUP 2011 - WHO WILL BE THE REAL WINNERS?

Our last poll (Will HB Businesses Benefit from the 2011 World-Cup?) showed that most respondents had little faith in the event business-wise. True, the last few months have been quite sobering for Hawkes Bay businesses. Yet, as a business coach, I know better than to give up on such a tremendous opportunity. Here are some ways in which I believe most business owners will be able to grab some of the profits for themselves. (read more)

WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A USED CAR?

I like my lemons freshly squeezed, into a Bacardi cocktail. When it comes to motoring however, I try to keep away from them.

For those of us who aren't either seasoned mechanics or AA experts, getting good value for money in used cars can be quite a challenge.

From where to (or not to) buy, what to look for and the questions to ask, we have put together some useful information to guide you away from the pitfalls of the pre-owned vehicle market. (read more)

RAISE YOUR HAND IF YOU LIKE PAYING TAXES?

Taxes seem to be getting heavier these days but it could be worse. Consider some strange things that have been or are being taxed:

- Going to the toilet (Flush tax Maryland 2004)
- Being a bachelor (England  1695, Missouri 1820)
- Beards (Russia, 1702)
- Playing Cards (Alabama)
- Cooking Oil (Ancient Egypt, approximately 2000 B.C.)
- Souls (Russia, 1682)
- Urine (Rome, 1 A.D,)
- Tattoos (Arkansas)

Whoever came up with the tax on Bachelors was obviously ahead of their time, remembering the quote from Oscar Wilde:

“Bachelors should be heavily taxed. It is not fair that some men should be happier than others.”

But wait a minute - hasn’t an obvious thing to tax been missed here? Monty Python thought so (see the You Tube clip below) and perhaps lawmakers in Utah are avid fans too, because in Utah sexually explicit business owners pay a special 10% on takings. I can just imaging accountants in Utah completing S*x Tax Returns for their clients!
