NEED A GOOD AND HONEST
PLUMBER?
Founded in 1918, Chas Bone Plumbers Ltd remained a family business until, in 2001, Ron Bone sold it to John Compton - who had started with him as an apprentice over 20 years before. The business had a solid reputation for excellent pricing and workmanship. John and his wife Raewyn made sure to keep it that way.
The strategy served them well, as they were not affected as badly as their competitors when the recession hit the building industry:
“We've always focused on maintenance work, says John. When the building industry went down, those plumbers who lost a lot of contracts started to crowd our little market. Somehow, even without advertising, we didn't seem to lose as much business as the competition. We rely on word of mouth and our good reputation.”
John is maybe a little too modest, though. They did do something very important to keep the business going: diversification. Acquiring a draining machine and a camera to send into those pipes, they decided to stick to their fair and honest policy by not charging their customers for the use of the camera.
“The charge for the drain machine is standard too, so that means that we can be upfront with the client about the cost.”
Raewyn, who has now taken over the administration of the company says: “Working with Nick means that we finally understand a lot more about our business' financial position. Nick takes the time to meet us whenever we need to, and will explain everything in terms that we understand...
– Or repeat it until we do,” laughs John.
After meeting the couple and chatting to their staff, I know who I will call next time I need plumbers.
